The Tapir's Quest

The Story:
The Tapir was kidnapped by poachers, and sold to animal testing. You have to break out before the doctor covers you in lethal makeup!
This is a short game i am working on, with only a few rooms and characters. Just for fun.

Some screenshots:

Development Progress:

Story: 30%
Scripting: 60%
Graphics: 75%
Sound/Music: Huh

Expected completion date: mid august, 2006

I could do with some help thinking up neat puzzles to escape the lab. I have a really nice one to break out of the cage so far, but i need to think of puzzles to deal with the doctor and escape the building (preferrably via a window)
I want the game to focus on puzzles more than anything else, and decent graphics and animations.

Oh my god! This game looks SO AWESOME!! Cheesy

I'm serious here, those graphics are WAY better than "decent" as you say! That style is so very sweet!

Also I really dig the whole concept, although the Escape-from-locked-room -idea is quite much used. But still, the tapir is so cute and original game character, it doesn't really matter.

Great to see it's almost done. I want to play this very much. Smiley Good luck!

If this is going to be quite a short game, can I request a sequel now?
There should be more tapirs in videogames.

Kudos! Looks cool!  Cheesy

P.S. Can I suggest that "Walk to" be replaced with "Waddle to"? And perhaps "Look at" could be "Snuffle"? You know, just for the extreme tapir experience?

Haha, that tapir is adorable!  I'll be sure to pass this along to all my adventure-loving friends once it's done.  Are you still looking for puzzle advice?  Just send me a PM and I'd be more than happy to help. Smiley

One problem i am having, is that i have a cutscene at the start of the game with dialogue,
and i need to know
1.how to set it up so that the player cant skip individual lines of text with mousebutton, because the music ties in with the dialogue and rushing the text puts it out of sync.
2.how to allow the player to press f7 to go straight to restore game from the cutscene, rather than f7 skipping text. If this can't be done i will just make a screen where you can choose new game or restore, and make the starting cutscene skippable with escape.

Hey Dreadus,

This looks like it's going to be a great game!  As everyone has said, the graphics look smashing, and it's a neat change to be playing an animal instead of a human for once!

A couple of puzzle ideas:

Spoiler below, select the area to read the text

Doctor: I notice you've got him wearing those long lab-type rubber gloves.  Perhaps he has to put those on before he dares handle the tapir?  In which case, maybe fill them with glue (or some other substance hanging around the lab) while they're hanging to one side.  Or maybe he's allergic to your fur, so you need to rub some into his clothes somehow?

Window: Maybe the window is sealed, so you need to break it open with a hammer, or use a chisel on a crack in the glass.  Or maybe the latch needs oiling.  And once you get it open, maybe it's high up or directly over a thorn bush, or even (this'd be better) shards of the windowpane you just broke!  So you need to fling down a fire-blanket or something to cover them up and have a safe landing.

Just thoughts :)  Wish I could help you with the programming but I know absolutely nothing about that kind of thing.

Best of luck with finishing it this month and I very much look forward to playing it!

1.how to set it up so that the player cant skip individual lines of text with mousebutton, because the music ties in with the dialogue and rushing the text puts it out of sync.
RTFM:
SetSkipSpeech (int new_mode)

Changes whether the player can skip speech text by clicking the mouse. This option is initially set in a checkbox in the Main tab of the editor, but this function allows you to change it at run-time. The value of NEW_MODE means the following:
0  player can skip text by clicking mouse or pressing key
1  player can skip text by pressing key only, not by clicking mouse
2  player cannot skip text with mouse or keyboard
3  text does not time-out; player must click mouse or press key each time
4  player can skip text by clicking mouse only, not by pressing key

Example:
SetSkipSpeech(2);

will make the player unable to skip the text by pressing a mouse button or a key.

Well, you just need to put something in on_key_press, right at the beginning of the function so that it happens even if the game is "paused" (paused includes in a blocking cutscene).

Wow, this looks great.

Also, I know this isn't the critic's lounge, but the colour of the Tapir and the wall behind him (her? it?) to the right are almost exactly the same. Maybe change to wall darkness a bit, for clarity?
