Posted by madmanmunt on 2005-08-14 at 09:19 (IP logged): One of the most respected AGs games, Larry Vales has eluded me for a long time. I have been trying to play it since I first discovered the AGs website but it invariably broke after the first scene. It was only today that I finally got to play it and I think this had an effect on my appreciation of the game.
Since Larry Vales first appeared there have been a ton of AGs classics exploting the progress and new discoveries of AGs capabilities. Therefore, this early game felt a little underwhelming. Its like Star Wars. I didn't grow up with it like all my friends did, I only saw it for the first time when I was about 20. Therefore I don't have the nostalgic benefit and it appeared quite dull to me. Likewise, I'm sure if I had played Larry Vales when it first came out I would hold it dear to my heart. Instead I kept focusing on its shortcoming.
Still, there's plenty to recommend Larry Vales. The irreverent sense of humour, amusing contemporary references and old style Sierra graphics are all very cool. The award this game won for best player character was also deserved. Larry Vales is a likeable hero whose achievements are sadly never recognised.
The main downside for me was the puzzles. They mostly felt uninspired and predictable, sometimes even slightly illogical. If it hadn't been for the excellent script I would likely have found little to redeem this game. Sadly, even the script results to one childish gay gag.
I really wanted to love Larry Vales as much as everyone else. Sadly, it compared unfavourably to many other AGs games I have played and while it is likely that many of them were directly influenced by Larry Vales, I still can't muster up that much enthusiasm for this game.

Posted by Gilbot on 2004-03-02 at 19:50 (IP logged): SIDEBURNS!1! You can miss this mother-of-classic piece made with AGS!

Posted by Vel on 2003-12-18 at 09:39 (IP logged): This game is simply un-playable. I dont know what the plot was. Nor the dialogue. It all ends for me when I see the graphics. Every 5 year-old can make around 50-60 backgrounds or characters like these. This may be an AGS award winning game, but it certainly isnt playable for the average gamer.
Posted by captain mostly on 2003-12-15 at 07:03 (IP logged): This game is much better than the sequil (Although that's very good as well).
The most enjoyable AGS advenutre so far...
Posted by Sir Akseli the Chill on 2003-12-13 at 11:22 (IP logged): This game was really well made... It's actually the reason why I got AGS in the first place!
Posted by Ryvvn on 2003-10-01 at 22:12 (IP logged): Worth it for the Darkwing Duck references alone!!! A game that tries so hard to be funny that it actually is!
Posted by Kyriakos Hasapis (the butcher) on 2003-01-10 at 04:07 (IP logged): the graphics are bad.SO WHAT? this game RULES. It's simply the funniest game you'll get to play along with its sequel. The dialogs are too good to be true. Every single thing you read while playing this game will make you wet your pants from laughing! A REAL MUST!
Posted by Squinky on 2002-08-30 at 20:50 (IP logged): Very good game, one of the first I downloaded, and I must admit it is one of my major ags influences....
Posted by m0ds on 2002-08-24 at 14:59 (IP logged): A must have for all amateur adventure fans. Why? Because it's more than amateur, it's a classic!
Posted by Cooper on 2002-08-22 at 12:51 (IP logged): A Hilarious & refreshing game
